Viagra (sildenafil) is a product for men. It relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body. It also increases the blood pressure lowering effects of nitrates, for example, isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil), isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, Ismo, Monoket), nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur, Transderm-Nitro) that are used primarily for treating angina. Viagra is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
It does not prevent pregnancy or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
If you are allergic to Viagra or any other medications contact with your doctor. And also have you got any heart problems, you are taking nitrates (eg, isosorbide, nitroglycerin) in any form (eg, tablet, capsule, patch, ointment), or nitroprussid, tell your doctor. Taking Viagra with a nitrate medicine can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure. During sexual activity, if you become dizzy or nauseated, or have pain, numbness, or tingling in your chest, arms, neck, or jaw, stop and call your doctor right away.
Viagra comes as a tablet to take by mouth. If you are taking sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction, use it as needed before sexual activity. About 1 hour before sexual activity is the best time to take this drug but you can take the drug any time from 4 hours to 30 minutes before sexual activity. You usually should not take more than once every 24 hours. If you are taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction, you are unlikely to miss a dose since this medication is taken as needed, not on a regular dosing schedule.
Viagra may cause side effects. If you see these side effects tell your doctor: heartburn, headache, diarrhea, nosebleeds, flushing (feeling of warmth), difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, numbness, burning, or tingling in the arms, hands, feet, or legs, muscle aches, changes in color vision (seeing a blue tinge on objects or having difficulty telling the difference between blue and green).
Some side effects can be serious such as: sudden severe loss of vision (see below for more information), ringing in ears, blurred vision, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, dizziness or lightheadedness, erection that is painful or lasts longer than 4 hours, chest pain, itching or burning during urination, rash, fainting.
