Furosemide is a powerful diuretic. It is used to treat extreme accumulation of fluid and/or swelling (edema) of the body that is caused by heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney failure, and the nephrotic syndrome. Lasix works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output (diuresis).
If you are unable to urinate do not use Lasix. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, inability to make urine, gout, lupus. Lasix may affect your blood sugar level if you have diabetes. Control your blood sugar level regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor.
For treatment of edema in adults the usual starting oral dose is 20-80 mg as a single dose. The effective dose may be administered once or twice daily. For children the starting oral dose is 2 mg/kg. Until the desired effect is achieved the starting dose may be increased by 1-2 mg/kg every 6 hours.
If you take one dose daily, take the missed dose as soon as you remember within 12 hours. Do not take a double dose of this medication. Skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.
