Proscar is a medication used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It may be used alone or taken in combination with other medications to reduce symptoms of BPH and may also reduce the need for surgery. Proscar works by blocking the enzyme Type II 5α-reductase. In the body, the hormone testosterone is converted to a more active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride blocks the action of 5-alpha reductase, and therefore prevents the activation of testosterone.
