Tamoxifen is an "anti-estrogen" and works by competing with estrogen to bind to estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen which is often called an antiestrogen or a SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator) blocks the effect of estrogen on certain tumors. While tamoxifen combats estrogen in breast cancer cells, it also in other body systems imitates the positive effects of estrogen.

Tamoxifen does like estrogen in other tissue, although it does against the effects of estrogen in breast tissue. That is to say women who use tamoxifen may derive many of the beneficial effects of menopausal estrogen replacement therapy, such as a decreased risk of osteoporosis.

Before using tamoxifen, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have liver disease, high triglycerides (fatty acids) in your blood, a history of cataract, or a history of stroke or blood clot.

You can take tamoxifen with or without food. Use it every day and regularly for the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine completely. Do not take extra medicine to put in order the missed dose.
